Look I was happy when the Captain was rescued too, but why is it we are Proud to be an American at times like these. I'm proud to be an American when we provide AIDS drugs to Africa, or open the door of opportunity for inner city kids to get an education, or a doctor travels to the deep south to provide free medical care to families who can't get health insurance.

We should be proud to be American's at other times also, not just when we see hyped up media coverage of military operations.

I don't know if your post is terribly applicable here, James. I, for one, am proud of this country when stuff like this happens, stuff like what you described happens, and, to be honest, just about every day.

This story was simply exceptional, that's all. You can belittle it and call it media hype, if you like (I doubt you're intending to belittle it - but that is what you're doing by calling it media hype) - but it proved that our military men/women are people to be proud of. What they did wasn't something you could fully expect many other countries' military men to do. And even if they could, it's still an exceptional thing typically seen in movies.

Combine that with the kidnapped captain's heroism with his own crew and you have a VERY exceptional story. One that I have trouble seeing how anyone could think this was media hype...

So I see no problem with celebrating the heroes in this recent story, neither do I see any sort of headbutting with what you said. Nothing wrong with being proud with what you've described - just as there's nothing wrong with being proud of the story DJ posted ;) Really now, why not celebrate all of the above?

Agreed - I feel proud of America in both cases.

I don't believe anything about my post said that I ONLY feel proud of us in times like this so it seems funny that you tried to polarize over this James.
