My apologies for killing the Bat

To be honest the only thing I have ever heard was that bats carried diseases and were bad things to have around. I put them in the same category as rats as mentioned in the video. I was obviously misinformed...as were all four of us here at the house that night... and for those of you who let me know that in a nice way I appreciate it and I am changing my actions towards them and making a donation to a bat foundation as a result.

Cheers,
DJ

David,
Its strange to feel connected to someone I've never met, but I really had such respect and admiration for you for all that you shared and done for the photography community. I've been mourning over you all afternoon after the video, and I was really hoping and praying that you would genuinely learn from this. I'm sure I don't have to tell you the power you have with your fans and with that power comes great responsibility. Please help your friends who supported your misinformed judgement to also see the light. You and your friends can always adopt a bat.

I hope you're sincere in your apology and follow thru on your efforts to do more for your squeeky friends. And I do applaud you for removing the video. Thank you,
Carrie Vines

I think it's a REALLY common misconception.

You rock. Good for you.

Darrell-- look it up on the interjet. Bats are good, and bats are disappearing.

Allie's trip sounds amazing. The project they are doing has such significance. I think the word is finally just getting around, thanks to projects like the one she's a part of, about human trafficking happening here in the US and all over other countries. I have friends who just came from Thailand. The culture is so different. They learned a ton. Beautiful place, too.

Ouch, sorry you got bashed for this. Um, I did think the video and commentary was quite funny and I don't think any less of you as a person! Hey, what about people who hunt deer? They're much bigger and cuter than bats...

Ha! Well, ya know, people on line will jump down other people's throats for the goofiest things, probably will say things they'd never say in person either.

Anyway. I thought the video was hilarious. And, dude, the bat could totally have been rabid. Or radioactive. Just imagine if you had been bitten by a radioactive bat! you might start growing wings under your arm pits and hair in unfortunate places and get cravings for mosquitoes and fruit and stuff!

And then where would we be? In a very sad place, my friend. A very sad place.

I knew you'd get some blasting from this :) Ironically, putting out poison or traps for rats is a far more inhumane way for an animal to die. That bat looked like it died instantly.

Personally, I would have caught the bat and let it go (after I sat and watched it for an hour), but that's me. I'm animal crazy...I catch rats that make it into our house and let 'em go far away - so I'm a little crazy. But there's nothing wrong with extermination so long as the animal doesn't suffer (or if the animal isn't endangered). You're all good in my book :) I mean we all (most of us) eat meat, you know? This isn't much different.

bobby

on a side note, I saw Josh's showit site and am so psyched on it! Seriously, you know how to bring it!!!

Dude, you kill -atts. I think you can take that Freedom House invite & stick it where the bats don't even go. ;)

M..nevermind...

Regardless of what everyone has said about your video, the comments generated from it have made me laugh time and time again! Jewel's comment was the best!

You rock! I don't care what other people say. I got your back, dawg! lol

Yep, look what the CDC says, "Rabies can be confirmed only in a laboratory. However, any bat that is active by day, is found in a place where bats are not usually seen (for example, in a room in your home or on the lawn), or is unable to fly, is far more likely than others to be rabid. Such bats are often the most easily approached. Therefore, it is best never to handle any bat." And it does talk about people dying from bats.

I didn't find it the least bit funny, nor did my wife. I'm glad you listened and learned form those who are informed on the issue. It shows you're the bigger person. Very nice!

coming out of blog hiding, i think this is the most random blog post i have ever seen, of course, its out of context for me, since i didnt read the preceding posts. Nonetheless, wow. Cool how information changes our viewpoint on things, The older I get the more I realize i don't know it all and that I can know more. Thats freedom in itself. SEe you around buddy..

DJ - good job on re-evaluating your actions. It takes a big person to look inward and make a change. Many of us have many misconceptions about many things, a little research and education would do us all well from time to time.
