Good idea Gary!

I saw this post on Gary's blog about a great way to learn is to go along with another photographer and I also know that Bob Davis is doing a workshop that allows photographers to essentially shoot a wedding with him!

Click here and checkout this opportunity! Bob Davis and I did a workshop together in Paris last year (video below) and it was incredible to see Bob work. His specialty is...well...everything...but he is a master at working with small external light sources to give your images so much more depth and impact.

I'm heading up to Chicago next week to see Bob and Mike on their tour!!! Can't wait! Having the opportunity to work with you, DJ, and now learning from them definitely has me on the right track. Thanks for all you do DJ!

So when do you let me know when I can pay to be your assistant?!?!?

Joking but serious :)

I think Gary's tip was for the "Top Photographer" to make money instead of us beginners learning. I think for us new-b's to learn is to find another new-b and go about it together.

Read everything you can and get out and shoot.

I think the best advice for all of us is to continue being the student AND the teacher. We all need to invest in others and invest in ourselves and continue our own growth.

I've witnessed too many people in this industry wanting to "speak" or "teach" more for their own pride than for the benefit of others. It's not up to us to define ourselves as teachers - it's up to those benefiting from the knowledge being shared.

Winston Churchill once said, "If you have to tell them you are a lady - then you are not a lady." I think the same is true here. If you have to go out and tell people you are a teacher or ask for the platforms then maybe it's not the right time.

Great quote, I totally agree. I have a passion for photography and for seeing others reach their potential. I love sharing what I have learned. I am a student of life and I live life with an attitude of gratitude.

Peace

I just read Gary's post about charging an assistant, and while I understand the value to a student or apprentice, I think there's too much of this sort of idea spreading around. The photographers who are offering mentoring session "opportunities" are becoming legends in their own minds. There appears to be a lot more ego and greed involved than good, old fashioned helpfulness. Get over yourselves.
